Intro

Hello and welcome back to the TSJ CruisePod - your journey beyond the waves.
I’m Thomas Sebastian Jensen, and in today’s episode we’re returning to a very familiar place on our Metropolis Tour 2026.

For us, Hamburg was both the starting point and the final destination of this cruise.

But what makes this itinerary special is that Hamburg isn’t just an embarkation port - it’s also a city worth exploring for guests who join or leave the cruise here, or even those who only stop for the day.

General Information About Hamburg

Hamburg is Germany’s second-largest city and its most important port.
Often called the “Gateway to the World”, the city has been shaped by trade, shipping, and international influences for centuries.

Today, Hamburg combines maritime tradition with modern urban development.
Historic areas like the Speicherstadt, with its red-brick warehouses and canals, stand right next to the modern HafenCity, one of Europe’s largest inner-city development projects. The city is also known for its music scene, green spaces, and relaxed but cosmopolitan atmosphere.

Thanks to its size and variety, Hamburg works equally well as a cruise turnaround port and as a destination in its own right.

Embarkation and Disembarkation in Hamburg

For this Metropolis Tour, embarking and disembarking in Hamburg turned out to be remarkably stress-free.

The HafenCity Cruise Terminal is modern, well organized, and easy to navigate.
Check-in and luggage handling were efficient, security procedures were smooth, and signage made orientation simple even for first-time cruisers.

Because this itinerary allows guests to embark or disembark at several ports, Hamburg plays a flexible role. Some travelers start their journey here, others end it, and some may only experience the city as a port of call.

That flexibility makes Hamburg an excellent hub - whether you’re beginning your cruise adventure or coming full circle after several days at sea.

Excursions and Things to Do in Hamburg

For guests who didn’t start their journey in Hamburg, a wide range of excursions is available, offering different ways to experience the city and its surroundings.

One popular option is a highlights tour of Hamburg, covering major landmarks such as the Rathaus, Speicherstadt, Jungfernstieg, the Reeperbahn, St. Michael’s Church - known locally as “Michel” - and the historic Krameramtsgasse.

For those who want to experience Hamburg from multiple perspectives, another excursion combines city sightseeing with a boat tour, offering views of the skyline, canals, and harbor from the water before continuing by bus through the city’s most famous districts.

Shorter panoramic tours are also available, focusing on photo stops and key sights, ideal for travelers with limited time who still want a good first impression of the city.

Beyond Hamburg itself, excursions lead to nearby destinations such as Lübeck, a beautiful medieval Hanseatic city and UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its historic old town, churches, and the iconic Holstentor gate.

Music lovers can also enjoy themed tours like Hamburg highlights with a Beatles twist, exploring the neighborhoods where the Beatles performed early in their careers and helped shape modern pop music.

Together, these options show just how versatile Hamburg is - whether your interest lies in history, architecture, music, or maritime culture.

Outro

With this look at Hamburg, we’ve completed the geographical journey of the Metropolis Tour.

But before we truly wrap things up, there’s still one important part of the story left to tell.

In the next and final episode of this season, we’ll shift our focus away from ports and cities and head back on board the MSC Poesia. That episode will be all about life at sea - the daily routines, the atmosphere on board, and what it feels like to experience a city-focused cruise from the perspective of the ship itself.

So stay with me for one last episode, thank you for listening, and I’ll see you once more beyond the waves.
