Intro

Hello and welcome aboard the TSJ CruisePod - your journey beyond the waves.

I’m Thomas Sebastian Jensen, and this is the official podcast of the TSJ CruiseBlog.

Whether you’re listening from home, on the road, or maybe even from a balcony cabin somewhere at sea - I’m really glad you’re here.

In this episode, we’re continuing our journey on the World Cruise 2025 aboard the MSC Magnifica.

Today, we’re heading to three incredible destinations: Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, and Puerto Madryn.

RIO DE JANEIRO - A CITY LIKE NO OTHER

Arriving in Rio de Janeiro… is something you don’t forget.

Even before we reached the port, early in the morning, we could already see two of the city’s most iconic landmarks:

Sugarloaf Mountain… and high above it all… Christ the Redeemer.

Just seeing them from the ship created this sense of anticipation.

And as we slowly entered Guanabara Bay… it became clear: This place is special.

Yes, our arrival was slightly delayed due to a medical emergency during the night… but honestly, that didn’t matter anymore.

Because Rio immediately takes your attention.

Our first highlight of the day took us straight to Corcovado.

The journey through the city already gave us a glimpse of Rio’s energy - busy streets, yellow taxis, small bars on every corner, and always those green hills in the background.

But then… came the heat.

An intense heat wave hit the city that day.

Around 37 degrees Celsius.

Standing in the sun while waiting for the train up the mountain… that was a challenge.

But once we reached the top…

Everything else faded away.

Christ the Redeemer.

38 meters tall… standing above the city…

And the view…

It’s one of those moments that no photo can truly capture.

Beaches, mountains, lagoons, the city stretching endlessly below you.

It’s overwhelming… in the best possible way.

After that, we continued with a city tour and eventually reached Copacabana.

One of the most famous beaches in the world.

Loud. Busy. Vibrant.

Exactly as you imagine it.

Even walking on the sand was a challenge - it was so hot that wooden planks had been placed so people wouldn’t burn their feet.

Our second day in Rio was much more relaxed.

The heat was still intense, so we focused on quieter areas.

We explored the revitalized port district… a place where old warehouses meet modern street art and open waterfront spaces.

A completely different side of Rio.

Calmer. Almost meditative.

And then, in the afternoon…

It was time to leave.

Standing on deck as we slowly departed Guanabara Bay… watching the skyline fade into the tropical haze…

That was one of those moments you just stand still and take in.

After Rio… the journey continued further south.

From tropical heat… to a city often called the Paris of South America.

Buenos Aires.

BUENOS AIRES - ELEGANCE AND PASSION

We arrived earlier than expected in Buenos Aires.

Instead of 10 a.m., we were already in port at 7:30.

After a short stop at the terminal - and a failed attempt to exchange money - we decided not to worry about it.

Sometimes… things don’t go as planned.

And that’s okay.

In the afternoon, our city tour began.

And within minutes, it was clear why Buenos Aires has such a reputation.

Wide boulevards. Elegant buildings. A very European feel.

Recoleta, in particular, stood out.

Tree-lined streets, beautiful façades, small cafés…

It really does feel like a mix of Paris and South America.

We also passed Avenida 9 de Julio - one of the widest streets in the world.

And landmarks like the Teatro Colón and the Obelisk.

At Plaza de Mayo, we reached the historic heart of the city, surrounded by colonial buildings and the famous Casa Rosada.

Then came one of the most colorful parts of the day:

La Boca.

Brightly painted houses… street art… music everywhere.

And of course… tango.

You don’t just watch it here.

You feel it.

To finish the tour, we visited Puerto Madero - a modern district right by the water.

Glass buildings, restaurants, old warehouses transformed into something new.

A perfect contrast to the historic parts of the city.

Back on board that evening… we experienced something special:

A live tango show.

Elegant. Emotional. The perfect ending to a day in Buenos Aires.

On our second day, we explored the city again - this time more relaxed, with a hop-on hop-off bus.

Seeing everything from a different perspective… taking more time…

And once again, La Boca stood out.

Because it’s not just a place.

It’s a feeling.

We ended our stay with a classic Argentine dinner:

Empanadas… a perfectly cooked steak… and dulce de leche cake.

Honestly… it doesn’t get much better than that.

From Buenos Aires…

We continued even further south.

And the landscape began to change.

Less urban… more raw… more natural.

Our next stop: Puerto Madryn.

PUERTO MADRYN - NATURE AND WILDLIFE

Puerto Madryn feels completely different.

This is Patagonia.

Wide landscapes… open horizons… and a strong connection to nature.

Our day started with an excursion to Punta Loma, a nature reserve just outside the city.

And this was something special.

From a viewpoint high above the cliffs, we could see sea lions below us.

Resting… playing… calling out to each other.

It felt untouched. Wild.

Our guide shared a lot about the local ecosystem… and how important it is to protect it.

We also saw seabirds, guanacos… and even Patagonian hares.

On the way back, we stopped at a viewpoint overlooking the coastline.

And that’s when you really understand the scale of this region.

It feels endless.

Back in the city, we visited a small handicraft market… picked up a few souvenirs…

And, of course, continued our tradition:

Buying a magnet and a postcard.

A small ritual… but an important one.

At the end of the day, we stopped at a supermarket.

And for a moment… things felt a bit uncertain.

In Argentina, you often need to show ID when paying by credit card.

We only had a copy with us.

But luckily… everything worked out.

And just like that…

Our day in Patagonia came to an end.

No whales this time - wrong season - but still an unforgettable experience.
