Intro

Hello and welcome aboard the TSJ CruisePod - your journey beyond the waves.

I’m Thomas Sebastian Jensen, and this is the official podcast of the TSJ CruiseBlog.

Whether you’re listening from home, on the road, or maybe even from a balcony cabin somewhere at sea - I’m really glad you’re here.

In this episode, we’re continuing our journey on the World Cruise 2025 aboard the MSC Magnifica.

Today, we’re exploring Valparaíso, Santiago, and Hanga Roa on Easter Island.

VALPARAÍSO - CHAOS, COLOR AND CREATIVITY

Valparaíso is one of those cities…

that you don’t fully understand at first glance.

It feels chaotic. Unstructured. Almost improvised.

But at the same time… it’s full of charm.

Colorful houses climbing steep hills… street art everywhere… a city that feels like a living canvas.

But our arrival didn’t start smoothly.

During the night, thick fog had settled over the bay.

The ship’s horn echoed through the darkness… a sound that felt both eerie and impressive.

Even though we arrived on time, we had to wait.

And wait.

For hours.

Visibility was too poor… and another ship was still occupying our berth.

Only after nearly six hours… we were finally allowed to dock.

Not the ideal start. But luckily… we still made our excursion.

Our first stop took us to the Museo Fonck in nearby Viña del Mar.

And there… something unexpected:

A real Moai statue from Easter Island.

Standing in front of it… knowing we would soon visit its origin…

That was a special moment.

From there, we continued to the seaside promenade.

And the contrast couldn’t have been bigger.

Viña del Mar feels calm, elegant, almost European.

Palm trees, wide beaches, modern buildings.

A peaceful atmosphere… a complete opposite to Valparaíso.

Later, we returned to the port city and stopped at Plaza Sotomayor.

Surrounded by historic buildings… with a view over the harbor…

You could really feel the maritime history of this place.

And in the end…

That mix of chaos and elegance… made the day unforgettable.

But our time in Chile wasn’t over yet.

Because the next day… we left the coast behind.

And headed inland.

To Santiago.

SANTIAGO - BETWEEN CITY AND MOUNTAINS

Santiago feels completely different.

A modern capital… surrounded by the Andes.

And that backdrop… you notice it immediately.

The drive from Valparaíso took about one and a half hours.

Past vineyards… fields… open landscapes.

And then suddenly…

A city.

Large. Busy. Alive.

We started with a panoramic bus tour.

From the top deck, we could see everything:

Wide boulevards… modern districts… historic buildings…

And always… the mountains in the background.

At Plaza de Armas, we got off the bus.

This is where the city really comes alive.

Street performers… locals relaxing… tourists exploring…

And right in the middle of it all:

The Cathedral of Santiago.

Inside, it felt calm.

A quiet contrast to the busy square outside.

And then… time for something local.

A Completo.

Chile’s version of a hot dog.

Avocado, tomatoes, mayonnaise…

It sounds unusual.

But it works.

And honestly… it’s part of the experience.

After a few hours in the city, we returned to Valparaíso.

And back to the ship.

Santiago showed us a completely different side of Chile.

Modern… dynamic… and full of energy.

After leaving Chile…

The journey changed again.

Longer distances. Open ocean.

And ahead of us…

One of the most remote places on Earth.

Easter Island.

HANGA ROA - A PLACE OF MYSTERY

Hanga Roa.

The only town on Easter Island.

A place surrounded by nothing but ocean.

And that’s exactly what makes it special.

After the rough days along the Chilean coast, the crossing was calm.

Almost peaceful.

As if the journey itself was preparing us for what was coming.

Because this place…

Feels different.

Since Easter Island is a tender port, we reached land by small boats.

And from the very first moment…

You notice the difference.

Black volcanic rocks… green hills… endless ocean.

Our tour started at the ceremonial site of Tahai.

Three platforms. Several Moai statues.

And one of them… with reconstructed eyes.

That detail alone…

Makes the statue feel almost alive.

We also saw remains of daily life - canoe ramps… stone chicken houses…

Small details that make history real.

Next, we visited Puna Pau.

The quarry where the red stone “hats” of the Moai were created.

Seeing unfinished pieces still lying there…

You start to understand how complex everything must have been.

And how much effort went into creating these statues.

But the true highlight…

Was Ahu Akivi.

Seven Moai.

Standing in a wide open landscape.

And unlike all others…

They face the ocean.

There’s something about this place.

The silence. The space. The symmetry.

It feels… almost unreal.

According to legend, these seven statues represent the first explorers of the island.

And standing there…

You can almost believe it.

On the way back…

The weather changed.

Suddenly…

Heavy rain.

No jacket. No umbrella.

Within seconds… completely soaked.

But honestly?

That made it even better.

Because those unexpected moments…

Are often the ones you remember most.
