Hello and welcome aboard the TSJ CruisePod - your journey beyond the waves.
I’m Thomas Sebastian Jensen, and this is the official podcast of the TSJ CruiseBlog.
Whether you’re listening from home, on the road, or maybe even from a balcony cabin somewhere at sea - I’m really glad you’re here.
In this episode, we’re continuing our journey on the World Cruise 2025 aboard the MSC Magnifica.
Today, we’re exploring Aitutaki, Rarotonga, and Auckland.
AITUTAKI - PURE SOUTH PACIFIC
Aitutakiā¦
is one of those places that looks exactly like you imagine the South Pacific.
And maybe even better.
Even from the tender boat, you could already see it:
White beaches⦠palm trees⦠and that unreal blue lagoon.
The harbor itself was simple.
Small pier⦠a few buildings⦠a very calm atmosphere.
And honestlyā¦
That’s exactly what made it special.
We joined an island tour in an open bus.
About two and a half hours⦠but filled with impressions.
Our first stop was a small churchā¦
Over 100 years old.
Simple. Colorful windows. Deeply connected to the local community.
From there, we continued along the coast.
And everywhereā¦
These incredible views.
Lagoon. Coral reefs. Different shades of blue.
At one point, we stopped at an old wharf.
And just stood there for a momentā¦
Because the view was almost unreal.
One of the most memorable stops was a massive banyan tree.
Its branches stretching over the road⦠roots hanging downā¦
Like a natural tunnel.
Driving through it felt almost magical.
We also visited a traditional marae.
A place of ceremony and history.
Quiet. Simple. But full of meaning.
Our final stop was Ootu Bay.
Wide open⦠calm⦠and full of history.
A place where, according to legend, the first settlers arrived centuries ago.
And you could almost imagine it.
Back at the harbor, we picked up a magnet⦠but no postcard this time.
Not ideal for our collection⦠but sometimes that happens.
And thenā¦
One last little adventure.
On the tender boat back to the ship, a wave hit the open hatch above the captainā¦
And suddenlyā¦
Water poured into the boat.
Passengers in the front rows? Completely soaked.
Luckily⦠we were sitting further back.
And everyone took it with humor.
From Aitutakiā¦
We continued to another island in the Cook Islands.
Rarotonga.
RAROTONGA - CULTURE AND COMMUNITY
Rarotonga feels different.
Still tropical⦠still beautifulā¦
But more alive.
More connected.
More⦠everyday life.
We started with a small group tour.
Only about 20 people.
And that immediately created a more personal atmosphere.
We passed through Avaruaā¦
The island’s center.
Small shops⦠local buildings⦠a slower pace of life.
One of the highlights was the Cook Islands Christian Church.
Built in the 19th centuryā¦
From coral stone.
Simple, but powerful.
From the coast, we moved into the interior.
Dense vegetation⦠tropical plants⦠mountains rising in the background.
It felt alive.
Fresh.
At one stop, we visited a tropical garden.
And for a momentā¦
Everything slowed down.
Just sitting there⦠enjoying the surroundingsā¦
That’s what makes places like this special.
We also visited Ngatangiia Harbour.
A place with deep history.
From here, Polynesian explorers once set sail toward New Zealand.
Standing thereā¦
You start to understand the scale of those journeys.
And thenā¦
Something lighter.
A coconut demonstration.
It looked so easy.
But I’m pretty sure⦠it’s not.
We also got to taste local fruits.
Fresh. Sweet. Incredible.
One of the highlights of the day.
Back in town, we made a quick stop at a supermarketā¦
And of course:
Found both a magnet⦠and postcards.
Mission accomplished.
After days of island lifeā¦
The next stop felt very different.
A city again.
Auckland.
AUCKLAND - THE CITY OF SAILS
Auckland is a return to urban life.
But in a very unique way.
Because hereā¦
City and nature are always close together.
Originally, we were supposed to visit the Bay of Islands.
But due to a cyclone, the itinerary changed.
And we headed straight to Auckland instead.
Our first stop:
The Auckland Museum.
A place full of history.
MÄori culture⦠Polynesian traditions⦠natural history.
Even though we had been here beforeā¦
It was still worth it.
Especially revisiting certain sections.
And yesā¦
Trying again to take a proper photo of the kiwi.
This time⦠success.
After the museum, we continued with a city tour.
And what stands out immediately:
Auckland’s location.
Between two harbors.
Water everywhere.
We passed modern buildings⦠historic areas⦠and of courseā¦
The Sky Tower.
Visible from almost everywhere.
Back at the ship, we weren’t quite done yet.
So we went for a walk along Queen Street.
Shops⦠people⦠city life.
After so many remote placesā¦
This felt different.
But in a good way.
Outro
From the turquoise lagoons of Aitutaki⦠to the cultural heart of Rarotonga⦠and the vibrant city life of Aucklandā¦
This episode shows just how diverse a world cruise can be.
And the journey continues.
In the next episode, we’ll explore new destinations as we move further through the Pacific and beyond.
Until then: thanks for listening, fair winds, and I’ll see you beyond the waves.
