Intro
Hello and welcome aboard the TSJ CruisePod - your journey beyond the waves.
I’m Thomas Sebastian Jensen, and this is the official podcast of the TSJ CruiseBlog.
Whether you’re listening from home, on the road, or maybe even from a balcony cabin somewhere at sea - I’m really glad you’re here.
In this episode, we’re continuing our journey on the World Cruise 2025 aboard the MSC Magnifica.
Today, we’re exploring Tauranga, the Bay of Islands, and Christchurch.
TAURANGA - MORE THAN JUST A FRUIT
Tauranga…
at first glance, it feels calm.
Relaxed.
A coastal town surrounded by nature.
But once you start exploring… you realize there’s much more to it.
Our day began with something very typical for New Zealand:
Kiwifruit.
We visited a local plantation…
Walking through rows of green orchards.
Learning how this fruit is grown… how much work goes into it…
And even something surprising:
The kiwi was once known as the “Chinese gooseberry”.
It’s one of those moments where you start to think differently about everyday things.
Because suddenly…
You see the process behind it.
The effort.
The knowledge.
After that, we continued to the Elms Mission Station.
A place with deep history.
Founded in the 19th century…
on land that once belonged to a Māori village.
Walking through the buildings and gardens…
You could really feel the complexity of that time.
The meeting of cultures.
Not always easy.
Not always peaceful.
We also visited the Tauranga Historic Village.
And this felt like stepping into another era.
Old buildings… quiet paths… a slower pace.
It gave a very vivid impression of how life once looked here.
To finish the day, we drove along the coast.
Ocean views… fresh air… a calm atmosphere.
And afterward…
We decided to stay on board.
Sometimes, that’s part of a world cruise too.
Not rushing.
Just letting everything sink in.
From Tauranga…
we continued north.
To a place that holds a very special meaning for New Zealand.
The Bay of Islands.
BAY OF ISLANDS - WHERE HISTORY WAS WRITTEN
Arriving here felt different.
Not just because of the scenery…
But because of what happened here.
There’s no large port.
So we reached land by tender boat.
And honestly…
That made it feel even more special.
More remote. More personal.
Our main destination:
The Waitangi Treaty Grounds.
This is where modern New Zealand began.
Where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840.
And you can feel that importance immediately.
We visited the museum first.
And it explained something very clearly:
History is rarely simple.
The relationship between Māori tribes and the British Crown…
Was complex.
And the effects of that treaty are still visible today.
We also saw the Treaty House…
and the Māori meeting house.
With its detailed carvings and symbolism…
It brought culture and tradition to life in a very powerful way.
One of the most emotional moments was the cultural performance.
Music… dance… stories…
Not just something to watch.
Something to feel.
Before heading back to the ship…
We took one last look over the bay.
More than 140 islands…
calm water…
A peaceful setting.
And yet…
A place filled with history.
From the North Island… we continued south.
To a city that tells a very different story.
Christchurch.
CHRISTCHURCH - REBUILDING AND RENEWAL
Christchurch is often called the Garden City.
And you notice that right away.
Green spaces… parks… a calm atmosphere.
But there’s more to it.
Because this city…
has been through a lot.
The earthquakes in 2010 and 2011 changed everything.
And yet…
Christchurch rebuilt itself.
Not by going back to the old…
But by creating something new.
We started with a double-decker bus tour.
And luckily…
we got seats on the top level.
From there, we could really see the city.
Our first stop:
The Sign of the Takahe viewpoint.
And from there…
An incredible panorama.
City… plains… ocean… and even the Southern Alps in the distance.
A perfect introduction.
We also visited Mona Vale Gardens.
A peaceful place.
Well-maintained… beautiful…
A moment to slow down again.
Back in the city center…
we saw something different.
Modern architecture. Creative spaces. Public art.
Christchurch didn’t just rebuild.
It reinvented itself.
And that’s what makes it special.
After the tour, we took some time on our own.
Walking through the city…
buying a few souvenirs…
just enjoying the atmosphere.
Before heading back to the ship.
Outro
From the relaxed coastal town of Tauranga… to the historic heart of the Bay of Islands… and the inspiring story of Christchurch…
This episode shows another side of New Zealand.
A mix of nature, culture, and history.
And the journey continues.
In the next episode, we’ll explore new destinations as we move further along this incredible route.
Until then: thanks for listening, fair winds, and I’ll see you beyond the waves.
