Hello and welcome aboard the TSJ CruisePod - your journey beyond the waves.
I’m Thomas Sebastian Jensen, and this is the official podcast of the TSJ CruiseBlog.
Whether you’re listening from home, on the road, or maybe even from a balcony cabin somewhere at sea - I’m really glad you’re here.
In this episode, we’re continuing our journey on the World Cruise 2025 aboard the MSC Magnifica.
Today, we’re exploring three very different Australian destinations: Sydney, Eden, and Melbourne.
SYDNEY - ICONS AND UNEXPECTED STORIES
There are cities that need no introduction.
Sydney is one of them.
The moment our ship approached the harbor, the skyline appeared on the horizon.
The Harbour Bridge.
The Sydney Opera House.
Two landmarks that instantly tell you exactly where you are.
And even after visiting Sydney before, that arrival never gets old.
This time, however, there was a small complication.
The cruise terminal was already occupied.
So instead of docking directly, we had to anchor offshore and use tender boats to reach the city.
That delayed our excursion by about an hour.
But honestly…
In a city like Sydney, there’s still plenty of time to make memories.
Our excursion began in The Rocks.
Sydney’s oldest neighborhood.
Cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and a glimpse into the city’s earliest days.
From there, we continued to Bondi Beach.
One of Australia’s most famous beaches.
Unfortunately, our stop was short.
Just enough time for a walk, a few photos, and a look at the Pacific Ocean stretching beyond the shoreline.
Back near the Opera House, we left the group and explored on our own.
And then…
Something completely unexpected.
A LEGO Store.
Now, if you know me, you can probably guess what happened next.
Of course, we went inside.
And spent some time admiring the impressive displays and creative models.
The real highlight of the day came later.
A visit to the Sydney Tower Eye.
From the observation deck, the city unfolded beneath us.
Harbor.
Beaches.
Skyscrapers.
Parks.
It was the perfect reminder of how enormous Sydney really is.
The next day, we explored independently.
After taking the tender ashore, we headed to Darling Harbour and visited Wildlife Sydney Zoo.
We had already visited during the 2023 World Cruise.
But some experiences are worth repeating.
Especially the koalas.
Getting close to these iconic Australian animals was just as special the second time.
We also saw wombats, kangaroos, Tasmanian devils, platypuses, and echidnas.
A perfect introduction to Australia’s unique wildlife.
After a relaxing ferry ride back to Circular Quay and some souvenir shopping, we returned to the ship.
That evening, Sydney’s skyline reflected beautifully on the water.
But then something unusual happened.
Our departure was delayed.
Hours passed.
Rumors spread throughout the ship.
Eventually, Australian media confirmed the reason:
Police officers had boarded the vessel as part of an operation involving suspected drug smugglers.
Not exactly the farewell we expected.
But certainly a memorable one.
After the energy of Sydney…
Our next destination felt completely different.
Smaller.
Quieter.
And much closer to nature.
Welcome to Eden.
EDEN - KANGAROOS AND COASTAL STORIES
Because of the delayed departure from Sydney, we arrived in Eden several hours later than planned.
Fortunately, our excursion schedule was adjusted.
And we were still able to experience everything we had hoped for.
Our first stop was Eden Golf Course.
But not for golf.
Instead, we climbed into golf carts and drove across the course.
And very quickly, it became clear:
The real stars here weren’t the golfers.
They were the kangaroos.
Dozens of them.
Relaxed.
Unbothered.
Completely comfortable sharing the course with visitors.
Seeing them up close in such a natural setting was unforgettable.
Back at the clubhouse, we enjoyed coffee and cake while learning more about kangaroos.
One fact stood out in particular:
A female kangaroo can carry up to three joeys of different ages at the same time.
Australia never stops surprising you.
Next, we visited the Killer Whale Museum.
And here, we learned about one of the most unusual stories in maritime history.
The story of Old Tom.
An orca that worked together with local whalers more than a century ago.
It’s a fascinating example of an unexpected relationship between humans and wildlife.
And it gave us a completely different perspective on the region’s history.
After returning to the harbor and browsing a small local market, heavy rain moved in.
Perfect timing.
We were already back on board.
Looking out at the weather from the comfort of the ship.
From Eden…
We continued westward.
To a city often described as Australia’s cultural heart.
Melbourne.
MELBOURNE - CULTURE, HISTORY AND CITY LIFE
Melbourne feels different from Sydney.
Less focused on iconic landmarks.
More focused on atmosphere.
Culture.
And character.
For the first time on this voyage, we had booked two excursions in a single day.
A busy schedule.
But absolutely worth it.
The morning began with a cruise on the Yarra River.
And from the water, Melbourne revealed itself in a completely different way.
Modern skyscrapers.
Historic buildings.
Public spaces.
Everything connected by the river flowing through the city.
After a short break back on board, we headed out again.
This time toward St Kilda.
A neighborhood known for its relaxed atmosphere and connection to the sea.
The contrast to downtown Melbourne was striking.
It felt slower.
More laid-back.
A place where people simply enjoy life.
One of the most memorable stops was the Shrine of Remembrance.
Originally built to honor those who served in the First World War.
Today, it commemorates all Australians who have served in conflicts.
The view from the upper level was spectacular.
The city skyline stretching into the distance.
And beneath it all…
A place dedicated to remembrance.
It created a powerful contrast.
We also passed several famous landmarks:
The Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Rod Laver Arena.
Parliament House.
The Windsor Hotel.
And the elegant architecture of Collins Street.
Each one adding another layer to our understanding of the city.
By the end of the day, it was clear:
Melbourne isn’t a city that overwhelms you immediately.
It grows on you.
And the more you see, the more you appreciate its personality.
