In this episode, we’re continuing our journey on the World Cruise 2025 aboard the MSC Magnifica.

Today, we return to Europe with visits to Puerto del Rosario on Fuerteventura, Palermo in Sicily, and Civitavecchia on the Italian mainland. As the world cruise slowly approaches its final days, these ports offer a chance to explore, reflect, and prepare for the journey home.

PUERTO DEL ROSARIO - DISCOVERING FUERTEVENTURA

After leaving Africa behind, our next stop brought us back to Europe.

The Canary Islands.

And more specifically:

Fuerteventura.

An island known for its volcanic landscapes, endless horizons, and spectacular dunes.

Our excursion began directly at the harbor.

Soon, we left the coast behind and headed inland toward the village of Pájara.

Life here felt wonderfully unhurried.

The village square was quiet.

The pace was slow.

And the Church of Pájara immediately caught our attention.

Its distinctive architecture and peaceful surroundings offered a completely different atmosphere from the busy cruise ports we had visited earlier in the voyage.

From Pájara, we continued higher into the island’s interior.

Eventually, we reached one of Fuerteventura’s most impressive viewpoints.

Standing there, looking across the rolling landscape toward the distant coastline, it was easy to understand why people fall in love with this island.

The terrain seemed almost endless.

Dry hills.

Soft colors.

And a feeling of openness that is difficult to describe.

Our next stop was La Oliva.

A place that played an important role in Fuerteventura’s history.

Walking through the quiet streets and visiting the Church of La Candelaria gave us a deeper understanding of the island’s cultural roots.

It wasn’t the most spectacular stop of the day.

But sometimes the quieter places leave the strongest impression.

The highlight came at the end.

Corralejo Natural Park.

Golden dunes stretching toward the Atlantic Ocean.

The contrast between the sand and the deep blue water was breathtaking.

Walking through the dunes felt almost meditative.

The breeze.

The silence.

The endless horizon.

It was the perfect conclusion to a wonderful day.

Back near the harbor, we made one final shopping stop.

There were practical purchases:

Bubble wrap to protect souvenirs during the flight home.

And, of course, a supply of lollipops and Aquarius.

By this stage of the world cruise, some traditions had become non-negotiable.

From the Canary Islands, we continued eastward.

Back into the Mediterranean.

Toward a city where history, culture, and daily life blend together in a uniquely Sicilian way.

Palermo.

PALERMO - SICILY’S VIBRANT CAPITAL

Palermo doesn’t try to hide its character.

It’s lively.

Sometimes chaotic.

Often surprising.

And completely unforgettable.

Since our excursion didn’t begin until the afternoon, we had time to explore independently.

The morning was used for an important mission.

Souvenirs.

Magnets.

Postcards.

The essentials.

With that accomplished, we were ready to enjoy the official tour without distractions.

Our panoramic tour introduced us to some of Palermo’s most famous landmarks.

We passed Piazza Ruggero Settimo.

The impressive Teatro Politeama.

The Palazzo d’Orléans.

And the famous Teatro Massimo.

One of the largest opera houses in Italy.

Every corner seemed to reveal another layer of Palermo’s long and complicated history.

The true highlight awaited us outside the city.

Monreale.

Perched on the slopes above Palermo.

And home to one of Sicily’s greatest architectural masterpieces.

The Cathedral of Monreale.

The moment we stepped inside, the golden mosaics immediately captured our attention.

Walls.

Ceilings.

Arches.

Almost every surface seemed to shine.

It was one of the most impressive churches we had visited during the entire world cruise.

And considering how many churches we had seen by then…

That says a lot.

Back in Palermo, another remarkable church awaited us.

The Chiesa del Gesù.

Also known as Casa Professa.

The elaborate marble decorations.

The sculptures.

The altar.

Every detail seemed designed to impress.

And it certainly succeeded.

Along the way, our guide shared stories about Sicily’s history.

Including one subject that inevitably comes up when talking about the island:

The Mafia.

While much of Sicily’s modern identity goes far beyond these stereotypes, the stories provided additional context to understand the island’s past.

By the end of the day, Palermo had revealed itself as a city full of contrasts.

Beautiful.

Complex.

And unforgettable.

After several busy ports and countless unforgettable experiences, the next destination offered something different.

A chance to breathe.

To reflect.

And to begin preparing for the end of the journey.

CIVITAVECCHIA - THE PERFECT PAUSE

Civitavecchia is often seen simply as the gateway to Rome.

But this time…

We chose not to rush off to another major attraction.

Instead, we did something much simpler.

And exactly what we needed.

After taking the shuttle into town, we wandered through the streets without any specific itinerary.

No museums.

No guided tours.

No packed schedule.

Just walking.

Observing.

Enjoying the atmosphere.

Sometimes the best travel experiences come when you stop trying to see everything.

We found a place to sit.

Ordered a refreshing drink.

And simply watched the world go by.

The sea nearby.

The mild spring weather.

The relaxed rhythm of daily life.

After four months of constant movement, it felt good to slow down.

Back on board, the mood began to change.

For the first time, the end of the world cruise felt real.

We sorted photographs.

Backed up memories.

And began packing suitcases.

Not because the adventure was over.

But because it was slowly approaching its final chapter.

And somehow…

That felt both comforting and emotional.

From the villages and dunes of Fuerteventura… to the magnificent cathedrals of Sicily… and the quiet streets of Civitavecchia…

This episode marked the beginning of the final stretch of our world cruise.

A time for discovery.

A time for reflection.

And a reminder that every great journey eventually finds its way home.
